Correct Latching
Signs of milk transfer
Day 1 and 2 of life is considered ‘practice’ time as your baby is receiving small amounts of colostrum at each feeding 5-20 mls (approximately).
Day 3 of life is typically when the milk comes in more fully and the breasts become more firm with mild engorgement sometimes. The most important thing is to breastfeed as frequently as possible ( every 1-2-3 hours) to avoid severe engorgement, as your milk needs to be removed to soften to pressure in the breast tissue. Listen for frequent swallows as you keep your baby awake and stimulated. The sucks should feel vigorous and not light or fluttering (if the latter is happening – your baby is most likely sleeping more than feeding). Your breasts should feel softer after feeding and you will be noticing 3 wet diapers and 3 stools in 24 hrs on day 3. The stool color changes from a darker color (brown/green) to yellow.
