What is infant massage?

At its core, infant massage is listening and responding to your baby’s needs with an open heart and loving hands. It’s deep and nurturing communication done with your baby that results in a closer, deeper bond between mother and child.

What does an infant massage look like?

In the beginning it’s not always easy to do a full massage, so we just start off with the feet, then the legs, maybe a little rub on the head or the back, but as your baby grows we can get more advanced in these massages.

This short video from Infant Massage USA gives you a quick overview of what an infant massage class is like.

What are the health and emotional benefits of doing infant massage?

  • Babies that are massaged daily tend to be much happier, calmer, and less stressed
  • They digest better, so they have less collicky symptoms
  • Creates profound bonding and attachment between mother and child
  • Supports breastfeeding because the baby is more relaxed overall
  • Baby spends less time crying and being stressed because mothers are more attuned to their baby’s cues and emotional needs
  • Babies (especially premature babies) who are massaged daily gain weight, their brains grow, and they get discharged earlier from the NICU
  • Postpartum depression is less prominent in mothers who massage their babies daily
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication is encouraged through imitation of behaviors and mirroring of each other
  • Opportunity to establish a positive daily routine
